I can remember the first day of high school just like it was yesterday. I wore a black skirt, white long sleeve shirt, a black and silver necklace, and black sandals. Yes, I remember the details that vividly. I was so nervous, knowing that I was a small fish in a huge sea. However, I felt better knowing that there were over 600 other students that felt the same way. Being in such a large school, with so many other students I wanted to stand outbe involved as much as I could. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but I decided that I would run for class treasurer.
The school itself has a large student council who look over all of the other clubs and school wide events. In addition to that, each grade has their own representatives who lead the class in events, fundraisers etc. When I ran for the position of class treasurer, I assumed that I would just be working with the class funds and setting up fundraisers. I never thought I would fall in love with the position and be a part of something so amazing. I also did not realize how much time I would have to put into the job and how above and beyond I would have to go.
As class treasurer I did much more than just work with money. I worked with the other representatives to communicate to our fellow students about events, fundraising, school issues and so on. We had the responsibility to make decisions for the rest of our class. Our weekly meetings consisted of lists after lists of things that needed to be taken care of. We had our advisors as our support system. As freshmen, it was hard to get other students involved. We always had to be encouraging and not get frustrated when others did not appreciate all that we were doing. Sophomore year, we organized meetings and sold our class rings, something extremely memorable, as we would cherish those forever. Junior year, we planned our junior banquet. Finally, senior year we worked hard to plan the most amazing night of the year, prom, as well as planned graduation. Each year there were events that we took part in. We had car washes, pep rallies, battle of the classes, and spirit week. For most of these events the representatives stayed after school and into the late night to make things perfect.
While being the class treasurer for all four years I realized a lot about myself and about responsibility. From an average students’ point of view, us representatives did not do much. However, we did more than they will ever know. It was a thankless job and I realized that you will not always get recognition for the things that you accomplish. I would rather do things for others than do things for myself. By working with money and constantly fundraising, I learned how to handle money and how to manage it. My leadership skills exceeded greatly as well. I was a role model for my class and the classes below me. I learned how to make decisions that would not only benefit myself, but others as well. Working with other representatives taught me teamwork and how to listen to what others have to say and to have an open mind. I could not picture going through high school without having this position. It’s truly an experience that changed my life and helped me grow as a student and an individual.
